Hi. How can we help you?

If you have a question about our cloud server or hosted desktop services, we’re here to help.

What is a hosted desktop?

With a hosted desktop, employees turn on their devices and access all the files and programs they need. So it works the same way as a standard desktop. The main difference is, rather than being stored on a server, all the files and programs you need are kept at a secure data centre and delivered over the internet.

What should I look for in a hosted desktop provider?

Not all hosted desktops are created equal, and there are some key things you should take into consideration when choosing a hosted desktop partner. Find out more in our handy guide

Where is the data held?

With a hosted desktop, all the data, files and programs you need to run your business are stored on servers at a secure data centre. Your desktop uses the internet to connect to those servers and deliver everything you need to your device.

What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)?

VDI works by hosting the user’s desktop operating system on a virtual machine in a centralised server that you manage. So, implementing VDI requires in-house expertise and ongoing maintenance.

What is Desktop as a Service (DaaS)?

With DaaS, your virtual desktop data, OS, and applications are hosted in the cloud and managed by your service provider. You simply pay a subscription to your vendor, and you only ever pay for what you need. So, DasS doesn’t require any large-scale infrastructure investment or ongoing maintenance.

What is a hybrid hosted desktop?

With a hybrid model, businesses deploy and manage both on-premises and cloud-hosted services. Under the hybrid approach, while these models exist separately, they also interact with each other to provide a range of combined benefits. Designing, deploying and managing a hybrid solution needs considerable skill and an understanding of any wider infrastructure challenges, so it makes sense to find a trusted partner who can handle this for you.

What’s the difference between the cloud and the internet?

In short, the internet is a global network of computers. You could think of it as a modern-day postal service, delivering information at sub-second speeds! On the other hand, the cloud is a network of servers. Some of these servers provide a service, while others store information before passing it to the internet for delivery.

What is SaaS?

SaaS refers to any cloud-based software. Today, modern businesses are using SaaS to help with a broad range of tasks including storing data, accounting, invoicing, and customer communications.

What do I need to deploy a hosted desktop solution?

All you need is an internet enabled device and a stable internet connection.

What software can I run on a hosted desktop?

Basically, anything your business needs. This includes Microsoft Office, ERP, management software, financial software, case management software, and document management applications.

Isn’t my data more secure onsite with me?

Not really! In fact, with robust cloud encryption now available, storing data in the cloud tends to be safer than storing it onsite. Significant investment would be needed to make an onsite solution match the security and reliability of the cloud.

Don’t cyber criminals target cloud based data?

Yes they do. However, criminals don’t target data because it is cloud based. It’s the data they want, regardless of where it is stored. In fact, despite the headlines, in almost all cases, where a hack has happened it has been down to a poorly designed and maintained security system – not the weakness of the cloud. More security breaches occur with on premise solutions than cloud ones and 56% of IT managers cite improved security as a primary motivation for moving to the cloud. At Cloud Geeni we make security a top priority. Our Cloud Server services consistently achieve the highest level of data security and reliability, with best-in-class backup and recovery processes that eliminate downtime.

Are cloud services scalable?

One of the best things about the cloud is that it’s scalable, so adding additional space to accommodate growth (or scaling back) isn’t an issue. Setting up new accounts for new employees and ordering more storage space or applications can be done in a matter of minutes. What’s more, with DaaS, you only ever pay for what you need.

Are hosted desktops expensive?

No. The cloud has made enterprise-level hardware affordable. Our fully managed service – proven to improve your IT infrastructure – is available for one affordable monthly cost. What’s more, the cloud can help you to reduce costs – with no costly hardware to install or maintain. Just as important, upgrades and improvements are made as standard, at no extra cost to you. 50% of cloud users have reduced their IT spend by 25% and companies who move to the cloud save, on average, 21% per year.

How quickly can I access my data?

You can access your data almost immediately. On any internet enabled device. What’s more, the right hosted desktop solution will keep your data robust, safe, and secure with automated backup services and best-in-class recovery processes. So, should a severe outage occur you’ll still have access to your data.

Does the hosted desktop enable mobile working?

Absolutely. You should be able to access your data from any internet enabled device, wherever you are; ensuring everyone can retrieve all the real-time information they need.

What level of downtime can I expect?

At Cloud Geeni we guarantee 99.9% uptime for all cloud services.

Will I comply with Data Protection legislation?

While it is not a breach to pass client and other information to a cloud provider, you must ensure they comply with the Data Protection Act and the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This means (among other things) that they must meet established security levels, have sound processes for dealing with information, provide service level agreements, and have expected levels of backup and retrieval procedures. At Cloud Geeni we help ensure that you are legally compliant at all times.

Will my data be held in the UK?

The location of data centres has become increasingly important, with many UK businesses looking to switch to centres located in the UK. All Cloud Geeni data centres are situated in the UK.

Do I need a managed hosted desktop service?

With a managed approach, experts are looking after your system all the time, making sure it’s running smoothly and quickly. Managed desktop services also boast best-in-class backup and recovery processes. So your data is always recoverable should something go wrong.

What is big data?

Big data describes the information a business has access to; and which has the potential to be used for discovery and analysis. This includes data from digital and traditional sources. So big data doesn’t have to be huge; in our online age, there is simply more of it. Our cloud server services provide easy access and interpretation of big data which leads to improved decision making.

How will you get my data moved across?

Unless you are starting from scratch, you’re likely to have an existing on premise infrastructure that needs integrating into your new setup. We’ll establish how this works and identify any risk points. Next we’ll identify who is going to need access to what and decide what to do with inactive user accounts. Once we have done this, we’ll determine how much space you will need. Of course, one of the best things about the cloud is that it’s scalable, so adding additional space to accommodate growth (or scaling back) won’t be an issue. Once we have all the information we need we’ll adopt a carefully executed migration strategy so that there isn’t any impact on your business operations. Your new cloud system will run parallel to your legacy one until the process is complete.

What happens if my internet goes down?

While we cannot control your internet issues, should it go down you will still be able to access your hosted desktop from another location. This is a better and lower risk option than having your server fail and being left with no alternatives other than repair or replace.

What happens if my hosted desktop goes down?

What happens if you go bust?

At Cloud Geeni we’ve been at the leading edge of technology since 1984. With a reputation for excellence and innovation, we have an established heritage and position. So you can be sure that our business model works, but we don’t expect you to risk your business on our reputation. As such, we’ve established some additional security measures to keep you safe, no matter what happens to us.

First and foremost, your data belongs to you, so you can request this at any point. More than this, to provide added peace of mind we also offer a service which copies your server onto a drive, which we then courier to you periodically. So, if for any reason you were unable to access any of our services (e.g. if we went bust), you’d have a local copy of your data that you can refer back to.
